Technology in winemaking
Producing wine is the perfect fusion between tradition and science. Nowadays technology has a huge influence on how products are cultivated before being brought to our tables and the industry of winemaking is no stranger to this reality. Technology in winemaking has become such a big part of the process that we feel it’s only fair to dedicate it a few words.

Wine producers are implementing technology in order to optimize all the phases of the process, from the vineyard, passing for the production and finally to the distribution, giving particular attention to the environment sustainability.
Vineyards are now often patrolled by drones. Their main role in viniculture is to detect any kind of anomalies that could influence the growth and the health of the grapes. The advantage in using drones is that they can fly close to the vine trees and be used as much as needed.
Moreover, drones are equipped with sensors that measure temperature and humidity, and they can provide a large quantity of data and information that, nowadays, are essential to vineyard owners and managers.
In addition, in the near future drones will promote a smarter and more sustainable form of agriculture. Vineyards will be able to reduce spraying and watering considerably, which leads to reduced costs and a lower environmental impact.
Modern wineries are the ones that show more evidence of the fusion between technology and tradition. These wineries are equipped with rooms that contain large numbers of old wooden barrels used for the ageing process of the wine and, on the other side, the very modern steel barrels where fermentation is constantly monitored with sensors capable to measure temperature, oxygen, CO2 and PH.
Keeping this in mind it’s easy to assume that, in the future, even more studies are going to be done and that technology in winemaking is going to keep moving forward. It seems clear as well that the real challenge for wine companies is to keep optimising the quality and production in harmony with the environment sustainability.
This is only the tip of the veil on what there is to come in the future for the wine industry.
